Frances Edna Johnson Thomas, affectionately known to many as Granny, was born on January 23, 1910, in Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas, to George Whitfield Johnson and Luemma Holland. She was the eldest of seven children and was raised in the Gilmer – Kelsey – Enoch areas of East Texas. She often spoke, most fondly, of her childhood in the South. She especially loved Enoch and told stories of the fun the kids had in the community and the closeness they all shared. She recollected on many occasions of dances, the visits by the full-time Missionaries, and particularly of her love and admiration for S. O. Bennion, President of the Kelsey – Enoch Branches of the LDS church. She loved to hear him preach and felt he was a tremendous influence in her life.

She loved people and said that she never had one best friend ever in her life, but rather, considered everyone her friend and treasured the relationships she had with people.

She fondly, and with tenderness and great affection, spoke of her love for her parents, brothers and sisters. She felt she was incredibly blessed to have come from such a fine family and often reminisced of her life experiences with them, such tales known to we, her grandchildren, as farm stories, which we loved hearing each night until we drifted off to sleep. As a child, I savored those stories and always felt that Granny was sharing a great gift…the knowledge of who my ancestors were. Throughout my life, I’ve felt that when I pass through the veil, I won’t have to be introduced, but rather, I shall know my kinfolk.

It was in Greenville, Texas, that Granny received her nurses training, under the tutelage of Dr. Ed Becton, whom she greatly admired and respected. He told her family that he never had a better nurse than Edna Johnson and missed her long after she left Greenville. She pursued a nursing career as a Registered Nurse, practicing in Greenville and wherever else she and Dr. Ed were needed, as well as various other hospitals in Southern California…A dream of hers, which was realized.

She married her pen pal and Art School correspondent, George Washington Thomas on August 16, 1938, in Rosemead, California. After his death, they were sealed on January 6, 1959, in the L.A. Temple. Together they bore only one daughter, Myra Jean Thomas, who was the center of their hearts.

Granny was a faithful, loving wife and friend to Grandpa Thomas. Her love for him was unconditional, as she was truly put to the test during his times of poor health, and ultimate four year heart condition that left him confined to a bed. She greatly mourned his passing and has for over 40 years. As a child, I recall asking Granny why she had never married again. I remember her stating, quite simply, that it would never have been fair to some other man. He could never measure up or be loved as much as she felt for Grandpa Thomas. We feel so happy that she is with her sweetheart now, never again to be separated.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who always gave of herself, sacrificing all she could for the happiness and best interest of those she loved. As her grand-daughter, I am deeply appreciative and thankful to Granny for giving up her own life to help my mother in raising myself and my brothers. She was always there, eager to heal a wounded heart, comfort a troubled spirit, nurse a physically ill body back to health, tutor a discouraged student, keep one’s deepest secrets, laugh, and shared in our triumphs and joys. She was even an active participant in the courtship of my husband Doug and I. Rarely did we have private late night conversations that she was not a part of, while on her way to the kitchen for more vitamins.

Later, she proved to be a great comfort and advisor as she assisted me in the care of my own children. She was always willing to help others and was especially concerned for her posterity…their safety and well being, physically and spiritually. One sister recollected Granny’s constant concern over her younger siblings, a “Mother Hen,” if you will. As I worried over my own children, in various circumstances, Granny would often say, “I know just how you felt. Ever since the birth of your mother, I’ve worried over her safety. As a toddler, she was so fast and could disappear within seconds.” She spent her life worrying over loved ones, and yet she had faith that, in the end, all things would work out for the best.

Granny has been a life long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter – Day Saints. She loved the gospel and studied its doctrines and principles. She enthusiastically sung Hymns in church worship, I remember. She delighted in the work for the dead. Genealogy was, perhaps, her passion and she actively researched names, dates and places. If you weren’t related to someone, she could ultimately make you. How happy she must be to have come face to face with so many kinfolk whose work she completed or made possible in mortality. Through quiet example, she taught the importance of prayer, faith and a love for the Lord, Jesus Christ.

She loved to write short – stories and poems. Many times she shared them with we, her grandchildren, and I still remember feeling in awe at her creative imagination and captivating choice of words. I’ve passed on some of her tales to my own children, but unfortunately, they’ll never be told with quite the same excitement.

She loved to sketch, water color and oil paint. Each of her grandchildren could attest to this talented hobby, as they’ve gone to visit her and her whole apartment would permeate with the scent of turpentine. Her paintings will be treasured by her posterity.

Granny was an avid reader who loved all types of books. Each book stimulated topics for discussion and everyone here has undoubtedly experienced various discussions, or perhaps debates, on politics, religion or health issues with Granny. She encouraged thinking and allowed others to explore new ideas that may have been preposterous a generation ago. However, she had strong opinions and, at times, would not budge in her way of thinking.

She had experiences, in her mortal life, that taught her understanding and even wisdom and I’m grateful she shared her wisdom with me and with so many others. She has gone on to a new phase of life in our Father’s great Plan of Salvation. Granny was not a perfect mortal. She made mistakes and felt a need for repentance in her own life. But she possessed many outstanding qualities that should be more than admired, they should be remembered, treasured and we should implement them into our own character; thus, allowing a part of her to become a part of us.

We shall miss you Granny! We love you more than words can ever begin to express. The greatest tribute that I can give to you is to teach your admirable qualities to your posterity…to allow my own children and future grandchildren to truly know you. I know this mortality is very short and I pray I’ll use my time wisely and be worthy to be a part of your family always.

I miss you Granny and look forward to seeing you with arms outstretched and know that I am “home.”

Despite the fact that we are only into the month of January, I finally got around to reading this Wayne Dyer book and I had to give a big SHOUT OUT for it! What an insightful, inspiring, transforming & truly fabulous read! I loved it from beginning to end and would highly recommend this book to everyone!

This year's celebration was a joyful event!

This Christmas Eve was the year that our married children

spent quality time with the In-Laws.

For the first time in 30 years, Doug really wanted to include some remembrances of my childhood Christmas celebrations. Doug, Oliver & I ended up dining out at La Costa Restaurant, where we savored Mexican cuisine, Tamales in particular. I had spent the day cooking in preparation for all the kids & grandchildren on Christmas Day so I was especially grateful to have a night off...It was fabulous! After Dinner, we decided to go see the latest Mission Impossible movie...very action packed. Then, we came back to our house to follow a 30 year family tradition...the opening of one gift...always PJ's.

On Christmas morning, Oliver came over, we exchanged gifts and had cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Shortly thereafter, Doug & I attended a church service to pause and reflect on the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who is the reason for the season. Later in the afternoon, all the kids, grandchildren, & some extended family came over to celebrate.

Excitement was in the air...Children make Christmastime so Magical!

We ate a wonderful Christmas feast, exchanged gifts, enjoyed dessert and family time together.

It was a memorable occasion and one that our family always looks forward to with fondness!

I ADORE this season because people always seem to be Kinder, Gentler & more Loving!

As 2012, fast approaches, may we carry the spirit of this season throughout the New Year!

Seafood Lover's Winter Soup

I Love Dining at our local Market Street Grill and their Clam Chowder is one of my favorites!

Last night, as the snow was lightly falling & the temperature dropping, there was nothing better than a pot of hot Homemade Soup & Toast...Absolutely Fabulous!!!

Market Street Clam Chowder (Serves 12)
Ingredients:

1 cup red potatoes, diced ½ inch (I diced about 5 good sized potatoes.)

1 cup celery, diced ½ inch (I diced 3/4 stalk of celery.)

1 cup onion, diced ½ inch (I diced 1 white onion.)

1 cup green pepper, diced ½ inch (I diced 1 large green bell pepper.)

1 cup leeks, diced ½ inch (I diced 2 leeks.)

¾ cup chopped clams (canned or fresh) (I used 3 cans of clams 5 0z each.)

¾ tablespoon coarse ground black pepper

1 ½ tablespoon salt

¾ tablespoon whole thyme (I used fresh thyme.)

6 bay leaves

1 teaspoon Tabasco

¾ cup dry sherry

2 cups water (I used about 5 c. water...Enough water to barely cover top of potatoes.)

¾ cup clam juice (drained from canned clams or purchased separately in can)

¾ cup butter, melted

1 cup flour

2 quarts half-and-half

Method:

Combine melted butter and flour in oven-proof container and bake at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. (Sounds odd, but it is the easiest to do a thickening for cream based soup.)

In large saucepan, combine remaining ingredients except half-and-half. Simmer until
potatoes are thoroughly cooked. Stir butter-flour mixture into chowder and stir
until thick. Mixture will be slightly less thick than cookie dough. Remove
chowder from heat. Stir in half-and-half until blended. Heat to serving
temperature, stirring occasionally.Serve immediately.

Toast

Method:

Slice any kind of bread about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick...I prefer Artisan, French or Baquette. Arrange on baking sheet, laying flat. Spoon good Olive Oil on the top of each slice. Bake @ 350 degrees until bread slices are lightly golden...approx. 5 - 10 minutes.

The month of November will soon come to a close...I've tried to reflect on ALL of the BLESSINGS in my life... A personal belief in God & His Son - Jesus Christ, Husband - The very choice of my youth & the Love of my Life, 5 Incredible Adult Children whom I absolutely Love & Adore, 4 Darling Grandchildren who have reminded me just how magical life can be - Words cannot express adequately enough just how much I Love them, a healthy Body & Mind (Relatively Speaking), every Necessity of Life & so MANY Luxuries, personal PRAYER & FAITH that keeps Body & Soul in tact, opportunities to explore this beautiful world, treasured Friends & Family, terrific Neighbors, Liberties & Freedoms... TRULY, MY CUP RUNNETH OVER!

I've even contemplated personal trials that have compelled me to learn important lessons...for these, I HOPE that I am a better person!

For my EVERY BLESSING, I acknowledge God's Hand in my Life and it is to Him, that my heart gives THANKS! In a world filled with so much turmoil, He lends me PEACE, STRENGTH, HOPE, UNDERSTANDING & COURAGE to navigate my way through mortality, ever TRYING to become my Best Self...All that He KNEW I COULD BECOME. 30 Year Wedding Anniversary Celebration

June 19, 2011, marked a milestone for Doug & I...30 years of Marriage.

Last month, we celebrated that anniversary by taking a cruise.

We visited Florence, Monaco, Barcelona, the Isle of Mallorca,

Tunisia, Sicily, Naples, Pompeii and Rome.

We had a fantastic time, made new friends,

experienced an array of food & culture,

were privy to seeing some of the most beautiful parts of the world,

viewed incredible sites & artifacts,

( Pompeii being a highlight for Esther & Church in Florence for Doug )

and concluded our journey in Rome celebrating Esther's 48th Birthday.

It was such an incredible ADVENTURE for both of us!

September 2011, was a great reason for a getaway to southern California...
It is football season, after all... Utah vs. USC.
While there, Doug & I spent some time visiting the Ronald Reagan Library, former childhood homes of myself and my mother, my grandfather's grave site and my uncle Elias... And of course, some time with our eldest son, Joe & his wife, Emily, prior to the Utah game.
Thanks, Doug, for a fun 4 day weekend...It was fantastic!

Back To East Coast

Doug had additional training in Nashua, NH again so we enjoyed another week on the east coast. Since we had traveled there just a month prior, we opted to check out the Shaker Community in Canterbury, NH. It was so interesting to become acquainted with their history, faith and industrious work ethic. We also spent some time in nearby Boston, MA and never seem to tire of this historic city's beauty!

All week, there were news reports about hurricane Irene. As luck would have it, the rain drops began as we made our way to Logan International Airport and was pouring by our arrival. As luck would have it, I caught the last flight out of Boston prior to Irene hitting the area...Whew!!!
Again, Thank You, to Doug for a wonderful trip!

Our July trip to Massachusetts & New Hampshire was a lot of fun for Doug & I. We retraced the steps of some of our favorite places and visited new points of interest...Groton, Nantucket Island, the Cape, Boston, Cambridge, Salem and Nashua to name just a few. The weather was fabulous on the day we visited Nantucket, but for all the days following, we managed to hit one of the biggest heat waves on record...let's just say that we felt like we were melting! It was a memorable trip and the east coast just happens to be one of my favorite parts of the country! Thank You, Doug for a great time!

Oliver participated in yesterday's St. George Olympic Triathlon. After some time spent with his uncle Bob & Aunt Kim, a semi-good night's rest and an unexpected surprise cheering section comprising of Mom, Dad & Uncle Bob, Oliver put his body and training to the test.

Let me just say, "Oliver, we are so proud of you! Your endurance was amazing and you definitely finished STRONG!"

We wish you luck in September's 2011 Olympic Triathlon in Southern California along the Pacific Coast Highway! And we wish you all the Luck, Success & Happiness in your every pursuit! You are such an outstanding man and we are so honored to called you Son! May you know of our tremendous Love for you...And, Oli, you are one of our most favorite people!!!

I so loved reading my Nanny Girl's post of Ella's big day...
how her parents had made her feel Adored & Special...
how it was the Best Day Ever!

When I phoned Ella to sing to her,
she told me that she had turnovers for Breakfast,
got her finger & toenails painted a red pink,
how she was going to feed the ducks & go to the park.
I could hear the Glee in her voice!

Did I mention how my heart is so full of Gratitude for
Nanny & Brian and what a wonderful job they are doing,
as parents, to 2 of our Grandchildren?

Ella was just as excited for all the family & friends
to come to her Birthday Party the next day!
Nanny & Brian worked so hard to make the house/yard ready
and Nanny Girl did a Fabulous job on the Birthday Cake!

It was a great celebration and we sure love our Ella Bella!

One Of My Favorites

Doug & I traveled throughout Europe, for the 1st time, in the Spring of 2006. I fell in love with it ALL...but ITALY in particular! Whether it was the picturesque Countryside, the thrill of the busy Cities, the very warm and beautiful people, the Architectural & Art History or the fantastic food...Italy had completely won me over! I think of it as one of the most beautiful countries on earth!

Needless to say, I love the cuisine and have tried to duplicate some of the dishes I savored on our Grand Adventure! Recently, I discovered a Cookbook at Barnes & Noble that I had to share. It has already become on of my favorites! The recipes are so easy and the food is out of this world! It is entitled, Easy Italian Cookbook by Jennifer Donovan, The Step-By-Step Guide To Deliciously Easy Italian Food At Home. I found it on clearance for $7.98 a week and a half ago, now online for $5.99, and I can't praise this book enough! Even the Breads are so easy to make and honestly, the most delicious...I don't think I'll ever purchase store bread again! I highly recommend this book!!! Bon Appetit!

This past weekend, I've been contemplating Jesus Christ, His Mortality, His Example, His Teachings, His Compassion, His Miracles, His Sacrifice, His Love, His Mission, His Humility, His Willingness, His Divinity & Nobility!

When I think of Him, I marvel at His great Love for you, for me, for all Mankind! Since childhood, I have Believed in God Almighty, in His Great Plan of Salvation and in His Son, even Jesus Christ.

These past 47 years, the world has changed so very much!
Values and Standards have been replaced.
Wars and rumors of War rage on.
Communities are impacted by hate, intolerance, violence, corruption and evil.
Some say there is no God!

I am reminded of the teachings of Paul,
"Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal,
The Lord knoweth them that are his.
And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity."
(2 Timothy 2:19)

Since we weren't going to all be together on Easter Sunday, our family celebrated a week early. On Saturday, Ella & Hudson came to Grandma & Grandpa's to color Easter Eggs. They were joined by their Mom & Dad, Uncle Oli, Uncle Joe & Aunt Em. Then on Sunday, following dinner, kids were on the search for hidden Easter Eggs in the yard. Grandma & Grandpa Cahoon LOVED having most of our family with us and Grandchildren seem to make holidays so magical!

Doll House Remodel

Quite some time ago, Ella discovered a Doll House that had been made years ago by her Great-Grandpa Cahoon...The very same Doll House that her own Mom, Aunt Geneal & Aunt Nicole used to play with when they were little girls.

It was in desperate need of a home remodel. With so many other projects on the back burner, it was easy for Granny to put off getting it done...it was finally decided that we'd better put this on our priority list before Ella was too grown up to play with it any more. She is a determined little worker and I see so much of both her Mom & Dad in her...ALL OUTSTANDING QUALITIES! Thank You, My Little Ella Bella!...Miss Marley will be so excited to play Barbie's with you! :)

I spent my Sunday morning listening to a favorite Inspirational Speaker & Author, Dr. Wayne Dyer...on his book, The Power of Intention. I love the way he articulates his discoveries of our divine power within, based on God's Truth & Light, as to our value and responsibility to live our Best Lives...For our greatest Adventure is Life Itself! We must learn to see ourselves as God sees us. The purity of our intent and heart is truly what defines our character.

"Old Age Isn't For Sissies."

My eldest Grand-daughter, Ella, came to spend some time with Granny & Grandpa this afternoon. We worked for a little while on our Doll House Remodel, she enjoyed some snacks, we practiced her letters and name writing, she played some favorite games on my IPOD Touch and we read some books. I had really hoped that she was enjoying our time together! She had...So much that she began to cry...When I scooped her up into my arms and asked what was wrong, she stated, "Old people forget and I don't want you to forget me! And when people get old, they die. I want you with me forever!" I hugged her and reassured her that I could NEVER forget her in my heart...no matter what! Then I told her that whenever I die, I'd do my very best to always be near her because I loved her so much...She and her baby brother and her cousins! Eventually, she seemed satisfied, or rather, I had managed a successful distraction.

I've been thinking on my conversation with Ella and made two conclusions...I'd better be more vigilant in using my Oil of Olay anti-wrinkle moisturizer so that I can put off looking like the above doggy photo. Although, I suppose that if my wrinkles are ever that serious, I'd be so ugly that others would consider me cute! My other thought was that, while my body may age, I'm determined to keep my spirit forever young and hope to enjoy frequent outings with my girlfriends...perhaps even a game we loved as children! :)

I don't know how long I have until my Mortal Journey is complete, but I hope that I learn all the possible lessons that life can bring, I hope I serve my family, friends and community joyfully, I hope I can maintain good health, I hope to accomplish some of my dreams, I hope I forgive more, I hope others felt the love that is in my heart, I hope my children & grandchildren always know & feel of my absolute Love & Adoration for them, I hope my Sweetheart will never question my Love & Devotion to him, I hope I represented my God & personal Savior well, I hope I make it back to my Heavenly Home! Until then, I'll take each day as a Blessing and try with all my heart to think, speak and act in a way that would please and glorify our Father in Heaven!

Over the past 6 months, I've been pondering Personal Agency & God's Great Plan Of Salvation.
I recently stumbled upon a poem that spoke to my heart and had to share it.

Lamentation

And God said, "BE FRUITFUL AND MULTIPLY-"
Multiply, multiply - echoes multiply -

God said, "I WILL GREATLY MULTIPLY THY SORROW-"
Thy sorrow, sorrow, sorrow-

I have gotten a man from the Lord
I have traded the fruit of the garden for the fruit of my body
For a laughing bundle of humanity.

And now another one who looks like Adam.
We shall call this one "Abel."
It's a lovely name, "Abel."

Cain, Abel, the world is yours.
God set the sun in the heavens to light your days
To warm the flocks, to kernel the grain
He illuminated your nights with stars
He made the trees and the fruit thereof yielding seed
He made every living thing, the wheat, the sheep, the cattle

Each of us will govern ourselves through personal agency, as we navigate our way through this mortal life. Sometimes; however, others will make choices that will impact our own lives...
Each and every decision will bring "Joy" or "Sorrow"..."Truth" or "Untruth"..."Peace" or "Turmoil."
For "there must needs be opposition in all things."
I believe that God's Great Plan Of Salvation is a Gift to all.
Mortal life lends experience that teaches and enables understanding, compassion, wisdom.

While I only see fragments of the whole big picture, each day I know that I must do my best and then allow Jesus Christ, our personal Savior, to bridge the way between us and God, the Father.
Sometimes, our journey feels painful, difficult, overwhelming, lonely, fearful and unbearable, but I'm grateful to have the chance to experience ALL things...
In order to appreciate happiness, contentment, satisfaction, fulfillment, love, joy & peace...
Even if I too must ask,
"Dear God, Why?

For those who know me well...You know that I love to read!
Two years ago, my darling Sister-in-Law gave me a Deseret Book gift card for my Birthday and I purchased this book. I had a rather lengthy list of "Must Read" books that I was working my way through, so this particular one simply sat on my bookshelf in my office. Very recently, while waiting for some books on hold at our neighborhood Public Library, I decided that now was a good time to familiarize myself with this author.

What A Fabulous Book!

I'm only half way through it and I'm positively loving it and recommending it to Family & Friends! Toni's style of writing is so exceptional! It's not one of those books that one has to get half way through before it comes alive...It pulls readers in from the very beginning. Although it is a novel, it is written from an interesting perspective and is so heart warming and powerful!

In the final hours of this 1st day of February 2011, I wanted to take a few moments to reflect on this upcoming month that is thought by many to be the Month of Love.
What Is Love?
Love is synonymous with such words as attachment, endearment, affection, adoration, liking, devotion, warmth, tenderness, friendliness, adore, worship, like, cherish and fondness.
In today's world, there are those who define Love as amorous affection, physical attraction, lust, sexy, provocative, pleasurable, satisfaction, temporary and, at times, no strings attached.

Over the past 6 or 7 months, I've given Love serious contemplation.
I've been blessed to have become acquainted with multiple kinds of Love in my lifetime.

and unquestionably Sacred.

This Is My Beautiful Granny!
Born 101 Years Ago, January 23, 1910, In Gilmer,Texas.

This past Sunday, on the Anniversary of her birth, I reflected on her very presence in my life. Having been an RN, she was there for the birth of all of my Mother's children...except for one...Me. That was the only time that my Granny missed a significant event in my life...until her death in January 1995!

I MISS MY GRANNY SO VERY MUCH!

Widowed for over 40 years,
she is now with her Sweetheart and Treasured Friend, my Grandpa,
George Washington Thomas.

My Granny was the single most significant influence in my life and lived a life of selfless servitude to others.
She was the essence of Beauty, Friend, Intellect, Confidant, Teacher, Nurse,
Artist, Author, Student, Chef, Counselor, Historian & Spiritualist.

As I navigate my own way through this mortal existence, I look back to the Beacon of Light that my Granny was for me. I long to have her wrap her arms around me, to wipe away my tears, to lend me courage when life seems so difficult and I'm frightened of the unknown. I miss her tender compassion and understanding as I struggle to recollect all those shared words of wisdom.
She loved people! She never judged! She was so forgiving!
She loved to laugh and did it often!
I find that I look back often...remembering...savoring my every moment with her! Wishing she were still here!
Did I mention...I Miss My Granny So Much!
But then it dawned on me...She Is Still Ever present in my life!
For as long as I remember, treasure and implement her values into my own character, she will always remain a part of my mortality. And when my journey is complete, I know that she will be waiting with outstretched arms, to welcome me...For then, I know I will be "Home."

Hollywood Connection With Ella & Hudson

Our outing first began with picking Ella up and taking her out to lunch at one of her favorite places...Taco Bell for a Soft Taco Kids Meal. It was Uncle Joseph who started the Kids Meal tradition and Ella is swift to remind us. While Ella does love the Soft Tacos, we remain undecided which she is most fond of...the taco or the Kids Meal toy!

After a very entertaining lunch, Grandpa Cahoon drove us to Hollywood Connection and Ella was so delighted from the moment we walked in! She enjoyed one-on-one time with her grandparents; although, she was so happy to have her Mom and baby Hudson meet up with us, following Hudson's nap. She went on every ride visible, having no fear or reservation. She seemed to especially love the roller coaster and the bumper cars, which she delighted in chasing after and crashing in to Granny, Grandpa or her Mom. She seemed to also very much enjoy the Magic Show & Face Painting!

Ella also gave Roller Skating a whirl! As she navigated her way around the rink with Grandpa, she seemed eager to master herself on wheels. She found the carpeted area, just off the rink, to be easier to give it a try on her own. Granny was so impressed with Ella's good nature...Every time she would fall, she would laugh and then get right back up and try to skate. Initially, she fell frequently, but eventually, she did get the hang of it quite successfully!

Carrying On A Family Tradition
Dinner With Our Kids/Shopping At The Mall

This year we all dined at Morelia's Mexican Restaurant and then met up at Fashion Place Mall...We gave each of the kids some Christmas money to shop for a gift of their choice. Most of the time, we just walk around in a group, talking and simply enjoying each others company! We try to meet the 1st Friday or Saturday of December, to kick off the Holiday Season, but we were still away on our Cruise...So we met up last Saturday and had a blast!

We did; however, greatly MISS Nicole, Zach, Boston & Marley and hope that we will ALL be TOGETHER for Christmas 2011!

November 2010 Cruise

In hopes of trying to make a special memory with our youngest son, Oliver, Doug took us on a post-Thanksgiving Carnival Cruise out of Miami, Florida. We were all so EXCITED to get away to a warmer climate...as SLC was in the thick of very cold temps and a big snowstorm...Little did we know that even Florida would experience a cold front and we would have lots of rain on this particular trip!

Barring the cooler temperatures, we still managed to see the sights in the Florida Keys and explore Cozumel, Mexico. The Highlight was the Mayan Ruins...We took a number of photos but our most favorite was one that included our Oliver!

There was something very wrong with lounging on the ship in our swimsuits and a sweater, taking cover from periodic rainstorms and the harsh wind gusts...But...A Cruise is still a Cruise and we're not complaining! The food was fantastic and I think Oliver enjoyed eating as much as he liked, whenever he pleased!
THANK YOU, DOUG, FOR YOUR GENEROSITY & ALL THAT YOU DID TO MAKE THIS TRIP HAPPEN! WE SO APPRECIATED IT!!!

After debarking the ship, we spent a day and a half in Miami. Oliver has a former High School friend that is attending school in sunny Miami...Brady picked Oli up at our Hotel and we didn't see them again until time to head to the Airport. Thank You, Brady, for showing Oliver a great time!

Miami is a really interesting city, as we quickly discovered, and I really enjoyed our walk along South Beach!
It was a GREAT trip!

The Gift Of Children

As I contemplate the blessings in my life, my children are very high on my list...next only to Doug & my personal belief in Heavenly Father/His Son, Jesus Christ/Gospel of Jesus Christ. In my role of Mother, I have a great many responsibilities. For this post; however, I wish to focus on one in particular...My job to Love My Children Unconditionally.

I always have! Truthfully, I absolutely Love & Adore my children! This responsibility has come as natural to me as breathing! Don't get me wrong...My children aren't perfect...there were times when they were a bit of a challenge for me and I had to extend patience/restraint...yet, in truth, there were undoubtedly more times that they had to do the same when dealing with me...A very imperfect Mom!

Recently, I read that a parent's job is to unquestionably and unceasingly love their children. A child's role is not to necessarily love their parent back. It's only a bonus if they actually do!

As I've pondered this idea over the past week, I've come to the conclusion that this very imperfect Mother can be human and still have mastered something to a state of perfection! After all, I've had over 28 years of practice and have concluded that it has been a privilege and honor to have been Mom to my Joseph, Nanette, Geneal, Nicole & Oliver! I have mastered loving them perfectly and am so grateful for their presence in my life! I'll always adore and treasure the many memories locked away in my mind's view and heart of them as little people! Now, as adults, they are so fantastic! They are wonderful human beings that have surely made the world a better place by their very existence!

Each, came into this world with unique gifts & talents and I marvel at their abilities! All are bright, thoughtful, kind and loving. My children have taught me myriads of lessons that have allowed me to grow, ever forward, and refine myself as a person. In their own way, they have served as a beacon of light for me and have become a Hero to me.

Joseph, Nanette, Geneal, Nicole & Oliver...May you always know and feel of my unconditional LOVE for you! You are my life's joy, and for every effort made or any act of service rendered, it has and will forever be my pleasure! Always, I will Love & Adore each one of you!

Okay...I know I said that I wasn't going to buy another book until I read the two sitting on my bookshelf but I couldn't help myself! I was going through a personal crisis and I just NEEDED a different perspective and uplift...Something that I felt might connect with my Spirit. I started reading this morning and I'm already highly recommending this book! So Fantastic!

Doug & I were driving home from a cousin's Wedding Reception and chatting about our first year of Marriage...That led to the first few years of Marriage...Which led to some discussion over the course of our near three decades together. Unlike most Newlyweds, we relatively eased right in to Married Life with little adjustments. As we discussed those really Joyful times, when life was far less complicated, we reflected on the many things that we used to do Together...Just For The Fun Of It! As our family grew, and responsibilities mounted, we forgot how to have Fun...Just For The Fun Of It! Mind you...I'm not saying that we haven't had Any Fun over the years, as we have thoroughly enjoyed raising a family and the many Joyful times shared...But, the busyness of life can sometimes cloud our perspective and get in the way of what used to be as natural as breathing. Doug proposed that we make the rest of Summer 2010, really fun-filled! Of course, I jumped on the idea with great enthusiasm! Why? Because very recently, some unpleasant circumstances surfaced that caused me great pain. It was my Husband, my Sweetheart, my Friend, who came to my defense and who was there to help me sort it all out. He patiently listened, gave some very sound counsel and offered up strength and encouragement. From time to time, I still find myself feeling melancholy and the tears spilling over, but I've come to know that it is my relationship with my Husband, Sweetheart and Friend that will surely last long after this mortal journey of mine is complete. Thank You, Doug, for asking me to share life with you! You are my Everything and without You, I am Nothing! Always...I Will Love You!

Last year, at this same time, I was in Honolulu helping my youngest daughter, Nicole, who had recently given birth to her 2nd baby, our 3rd grandchild. Having a son-in-law who serves in the Navy, we ended up celebrating the 4th of July at Pearl Harbor, along with a great many military families.

The theme...Patriotism, as I have not seen since 9/11...Families decked out in Red, White & Blue...Little Girls with ribbons, headbands & bows/Little Boys wearing T-shirts that proudly displayed the American Flag or dressed representing our Nation's colors, military men and women in camouflage clothing, all participating in the fun of games and booths set up to entertain kids of all ages. A spacious field filled blankets and folding chairs, strollers, coolers and people chatting, laughing and enjoying the close-knit bond of friendship and family...ever connected as one very large Military Family.

I marveled at these young families who well understood what it means to be an American. Those brave men & women who join the fight for my very Liberties & Freedoms, families who sacrifice their loved ones when Duty calls, parents who teach their little ones to reverence The American Flag and our National Anthem.

The Fireworks, accompanied with patriotic songs, took place over the waters of Pearl Harbor. It was fantastic! I watched the delighted smile of my grandson, as he looked up to see the beautiful colors and to hear the loud Boom of the cannons. I reflected on the very different scene that must have taken place on December 7, 1941, over these same waters. Though I was missing the rest of my family and my sweetheart, at home, my heart was Full...of Gratitude, Pride, Emotion, Hope...Thanks in large part to those, whose very presence, I felt honored to share on that tropical evening.

Thank You to all who serve to protect this Nation, the place I call Home! God Bless you brave Men & Women, God Bless your families and may God continue to Bless America!

Oliver participated in the Sprint Triathalon at Jordanelle yesterday, June 26, 2010, along with his friends, Patrick & Lauryn Roth. Having never competed, he did quite well and we are so proud of him! He earned a medal, placing 4th in his age group and 21st overall...All three finishing the race very strong. I think it is so fantastic that these kids are realizing their goals and lending support to one another along the way. Congratulations!!! What an outstanding accomplishment!

Twenty-nine years ago, I married my Friend, my Helpmeet and the Love of my Life! He promised to take care of me and love me always. I recall our Wedding Day, quite vividly...I remember feeling as if I could not love this man more than how I felt on that special day! I was so naive...Because that emotion was in its infancy!

These many years have passed and together my husband and I have shared a history that has included fragments of frustrations and pieces of Heaven on earth, compromised health issues and the meaning of sound body and mind, high risk pregnancies and the profound sacredness of sharing in the miracle of childbirth five times, the heartbreak of children's poor choices and the incredible joy of witnessing our adult children soar to unimaginable heights and knowing that the world is a better place for their having lived in it, financial hardships and monetary gain, heated debates and patient sacrificial compromises, full blown arguments and the joy of peaceful resolutions that are consummated by a love that is blessed by God Himself. Our life has been blemished with conflicts that have shaped, refined and purified us individually and collectively. Truly, I have come to learn, with regards to love, life isn’t about finding the “perfect” one. It is about loving more “perfectly” the one we’ve found!

Home Remodel

We purchased our home back in 2000, when our family moved back to Utah, and I did some immediate wallpaper stripping, painting and window coverings just to make our house feel like "Home." This year, we took the plunge and decided to invest some real money into updating our home. I wish I had taken loads of before/after photos, but I rarely think about it until the job is complete. The 1st job was to replace 3 furnaces and 2 air conditioning units...some $13, 000.00 later...and all I can say is "Done!" Next on the list was new carpeting for the 2nd story level and the main floor offices & family room..."Love it!" Now, we're tackling the hardwood flooring in the formal living, entry, hallways and dining room. We didn't want a long term displacement of furniture so we decided to take 2 1/2 days to prep for the hardwood to be laid. When removing the tile, we discovered that it had been laid on 3 inches of concrete and mesh wiring. It has been physically taxing on my husband to do the job and is taking much longer than anticipated. We've pushed back installment for a full week and will probably take every bit of that time to have the prep work complete.

Discouraging? Some...but I have "vision" and can see the end result and it is going to be really beautiful when our home remodel is complete! There will be some painting, some furniture makeovers, kitchen/laundry cabinet makeover & new hardware, new lighting, master bedding replacement and lots of little details all on a shoestring budget. Then comes the home exterior! We've been in our home for 10 years, having done very little, and sacrificed to make this dream a reality...Okay, I confess that it is more "my dream" rather than my Sweetheart's, but he is patient, kind and I thank him with all my heart!

Finally...a little investing to alter a house into "Our Home!"

Doug had business this week in Austin, Texas. He finished early so we drove up to Dallas so that I could see my big sister, Barbie. Though our time is very limited, we had to go see our former home. Landscape has grown vastly, but not much else has changed. So many, many wonderful memories of Plano! When asked why I loved Texas so much...I would have to say that it's the people...Some of the warmest most loving people in the world! What a fantastic season of life it was! I thought I'd live and die in this blessed state!

We have loved the 2010 Winter Olympics and the great success that American Athletes have had during competition! What incredible talent we have witnessed among all of the athletes...but, of course, we are so proud of those that have represented our country so well! My personal favorite has been the men's half pipe snowboarding, men's speed skating, and men's ice skating...The names White, Ohno and Lysacek will long be remembered!

I've also been impressed with the great beauty of Vancouver and the many media reports of the people, businesses and culture...I'm thinking it would definitely be an interesting place to visit!

Two Hearts In San Francisco

This week, Doug has a business training class just outside of San Francisco. He asked me to join him...And, of course, I'm always up for a great Adventure! I haven't visited northern California since the summer of 1990, so it was with great anticipation that I came to see what changes have occurred in this part of the country. One thing hasn't changed these many years...the beauty and diversity of San Francisco. What a great city! I fondly remembered Fisherman's Wharf, Lombardo Street, China Town and the steep hilly streets throughout the city. It was a great workout on Sunday, when we decided to walk around a section of the city and I happened to be in 3 inch heeled boots strutting around in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and holding on to Doug's arm with the other! I still recall the thrill of seeing the Golden Gate Bridge for the first time! It was an iconic vision of "really cool!" It's going to be a great week and I'm so excited for our time together...making new memories!

Movie Date With Ella

On Sunday night, some of the family were gathered around the kitchen table for a late night conversation. Ella and a movie date was just one of many topics. I asked my 2 year-old grand-daughter, Ella, if she wanted to go see The Princess & The Frog. Initially, that sounded great!...Until her Uncle Joseph pulled up the trailer for the latest Alvin & The Chipmunks Squeakquel on his phone. You can probably guess what the final outcome was!

Yesterday, we made our movie date a reality. Ella & Granny, along with her Mom & Dad, and yes, I did make Joseph join us...for our Chipmunk Adventure! The movie was cute...but I happen to think my little grand-daughter was the cutest, as she sipped away on her vitamin water, ate handfuls of popcorn and danced to the final song. She loved it and I loved sharing that with her! We are still going to see The Princess & The Frog because I think it'll be a fun movie date...but we'll wait 'til it makes it to the dollar movie theater. In the meanwhile, Thank You, Ella Bella, for a fun afternoon! Granny loves you bunches!!!

2010 - A Time To Learn New Things

Our cute little 2 year old Grand-Daughter, Ella Bella, began swimming lessons at Cottonwood Heights Recreational Center yesterday morning. Directly following her lessons, she called to tell us all about it. The excitement in her voice was so adorable as she announced "I did swimming" and "I made bubbles in the water" and "I like swim lessons!" Her Mom reported that initially Ella was a bit reluctant to join the other kids, as she preferred to watch them in their instruction. Soon enough, she began to participate and found that she was having a great time learning new skills that would help her overcome any fear of the water and accomplish the goal of swimming. We are so proud of Ella and, as with any new skill, it takes patience, practice and even more practice. We love you, Ella, and wish you all the best in your new adventure! :)

Doug and I first met in the Autumn of 1976 but our journey together didn't really begin until late Summer of 1980. This man came into my life rather unexpectedly, but he has been my beacon of light from day one! True, it might be said of us that we are about as different as Night and Day! However, with the passing of time, I've come to see that our individuality provides me with an opportunity to view things from a different angle and constantly grow in the process. My Fairy Tale Dream of a Prince Charming riding in to sweep me off of my feet and produce a Happily Ever After has definitely changed a bit...but no man could have loved me with more patience, persistence or passion! Doug, you are my Prince Charming and I thank you for the adventure that you have given me these 28 1/2 years of marriage! I know our Happily Ever After is up to us...And I believe it is going to be the BEST!!!! I love you!!!!

Christmas 2009 was Magical! The above photos help me feel connected to those family members in tropical Hawaii, while the rest of us celebrated a white Christmas in Utah. Christmas Eve afternoon, Doug and I were joined by Geneal and Oliver for a visit to Grandma & Grandpa Luna's home. Our time together was filled with warmth and love. Then, we met up with Josh and Joseph in downtown Salt Lake City to watch Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life, starring James Stewart & Donna Reed...One of my all time favorites! Later, Doug, I and Oliver made a couple of Christmas deliveries before heading home for our traditional Christmas Eve festivities. On Christmas Day, we had the bulk of our children & grand-daughter, Ella, with us for a formal Christmas Dinner, movie excursion to see Sherlock Holmes, back to our house for gift exchange and dessert. All the gifts were wonderful, but how thrilled we were to receive a tiny package representing a special gift that was on back order from Nanny & Brian. This particular gift wasn't due to arrive until July 26, 2009...A new little grand-baby! We are over the moon about it! 2010 looks like it is shaping up to be a memorable year indeed! Our family will grow to include a new daughter in March, following Joseph & Emily's wedding and a new little grandchild in July! How very blessed we truly are!!! Happy New Year to friends & loved ones all over the world!

Just prior and directly following our Hawaiian cruise, Doug and I were able to visit Honolulu and spend a number of days with Zach, Nicole, Boston and Marley. What a joyful reunion it was! This was Doug's first time meeting his 2nd grand-daughter, Marley, and it was so tender as he took her in his arms and she nestled her head right into his neck. My heart took a picture and I'll always treasure that moment. How much we adore each and everyone of our grandchildren! Hopefully, these few photos capture the essence of all that we felt. Thank You to Nicole for sharing her talent of photography! And a very BIG THANK YOU to Nicole and Zach for their wonderful hospitality! We tried to savor every minute, but I'm afraid this Granny is already longing for another visit! We miss and love Y'all!

Doug & Esther's Hawaiian Cruise To All The Islands

Trying to choose a few of my favorite photos of our trip is like choosing a favorite star in the Heavens...Impossible! Our trip was so FANTASTIC! Doug really wanted to have a get away and I must credit him for making all of it happen! He is amazing! We so enjoyed our time together and rediscovered just why we ever fell in love to begin with...Doug is my sweetheart and truly my best friend! Our days were filled with island explorations, seeing historical relics, relishing in some of the most beautiful tropical Rain Forests, waterfalls, canyons, coastal views, mountain vistas and volcanic wonders of the world! This time of year is typically rainy season, so we felt thrilled to have enjoyed the most beautiful weather! By night, we cruised in luxury. The food was delicious, pool and hot tubs were loads of fun, water aerobics and learning to hula dance was a blast for Esther, the shows were entertaining, the people we met were delightful and those romantic moonlit strolls on deck will forever be treasured! THANK YOU A THOUSAND TIMES OVER, MY DARLING DOUG!!!

Kickoff The Christmas Holiday

The first Friday of December marked the beginning of a new tradition for our family...though, it was one that originated with Doug's parents...We took our kids out to dinner at Pei Wei and then an evening of shopping at South Towne Mall with their Christmas money. Everyone had a great time and it was nice to simply be together as a family! Our Hawaiian children and grandchildren were very missed!

Big Weekend For Joseph

November 2o & 21, 2009, proved to be a BIG weekend for our Joseph. He became engaged to Emily Fitzgerald and his name was drawn for the Football Toss in between quarters at Rice-Eccles Stadium during a Utah UTE football game. Though his nerves were a bit jumbled, he successfully managed both and made it all look quite easy! Congrats to Joseph who won the heart of sweet Emily and $1,000.00 at the ballgame!

Hawaiian Memories

In 6 days, Doug and I will be off for our Hawaiian Get-Away...where we'll visit Nicole, Zach and two of our beautiful grandchildren, Boston & Marley! In addition, Doug and I will spend a week cruising to all the Islands for some very deserved "Alone Time." We are so excited!!! Nicole and I were talking tonight about some of the things we'd like to do with them during our visit. Following Joseph's Mission, we took all the family to Hawaii and I came across some photos that I thought our Hawaiian daughter might enjoy...so here's to you, Nicole! Can't wait to see y'all!
